Did you know that Saint Luke Baptist Church’s current building is only one chapter in its long and fascinating history? Right here before us stands a testament to faith perseverance and community. Saint Luke Baptist Church wasn’t always this impressive structure. It began much more humbly.
This impressive building is the result of a long journey. It started with the leadership of Dr CD Pettaway. Elected in 1947 he was a powerful religious leader. He served as president of the National Baptist Convention of America. Dr Pettaway’s tenure saw significant growth. The church needed a baptistry. However the existing foundation couldn’t support it. This led to a bold decision in 1950. They would build a new church entirely.
A fundraising campaign followed. Enough money was raised to break ground on March 6 1965. The finished sanctuary is now known as the Chapel. Its architectural design is unique. It’s one of only five of its kind globally. Dr Pettaway’s legacy extended far beyond Saint Luke Baptist Church. He passed away in 1968 after 22 years of service.
The church continued to grow. Rev William J Ross had a vision. He wanted to enlarge the choir loft and add an educational wing. This vision was realized under Rev Arnette Dotson. The church’s education annex now bears Rev Ross’s name. This demonstrates the continuous growth and adaptation of Saint Luke Baptist Church.
Growth continued so they expanded again. In 2006 thirty-four acres of land were purchased. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 1 2007. The 40000 square-foot worship facility opened November 22 2008. This facility houses the current Saint Luke Baptist Church. It’s where the congregation gathers today. Saint Luke Baptist Church continues its mission. It serves the community where it was founded over 150 years ago. The congregation spans generations from infants to those in their late 80s. The church strives to continue its legacy of faith and community service.
