In 1953, the land where Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church now stands was acquired. It was a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of a vibrant spiritual community in Fairfax City. Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church officially became a parish in 1957. The initial congregation consisted of 450 families, a testament to the growing Catholic presence in the area. Before its official founding, Saint Leo the Great was a mission of Saint Mary of Sorrows in Fairfax Station. The first masses were held in the current parish hall. This space was originally intended to be the lower level of a much larger church. Construction of this grander vision was eventually abandoned. The cornerstone for the church we see today, Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church, was laid in 1965. The dedication followed swiftly in 1966. A unique feature of Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church is its stained glass windows. Their design is a departure from traditional styles. The glass resembles early glassmaking techniques. The imperfections and warm colors, chosen by artist Jean Jacques Duval, create a unique atmosphere for worship. These windows, seemingly simple at first glance, tell the complex story of redemption. Each pane depicts a key figure or event: creation, the four major prophets, Pope St. Leo the Great himself, the Four Evangelists, the Immaculate Conception, and the Resurrection. Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church has seen remarkable growth since its humble beginnings. Today, the parish boasts over 3,300 households, representing nearly 9,700 individuals. The accompanying school, St. Leo the Great Catholic School, founded in 1955, thrives with over 400 students. An additional 550 students participate in religious education programs. Saint Leo the Great is known as the only “Great” parish in the Arlington Diocese. It’s a unique distinction, honoring Pope St. Leo the Great. This vibrant community embraces a rich diversity of cultures and nationalities. They are all united in their faith. The spirit of Saint Leo the Great continues to shine. The parish is a place where the Gospel is proclaimed. Faith is nurtured and strengthened. The poor and needy are served. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
