It began in the hearts of members from the nearby Seminole Heights Methodist Church, who dreamt of a new spiritual home for the Wellswood neighborhood. In 1950, their dream took its first tangible step. Imagine the excitement as these pioneering souls, 69 strong, gathered for their first meeting. They held their first Sunday school class and worship service not within these grand walls, but in the humble halls of Mendenhall Elementary School. Just a year later, in 1951, their new church, Saint Johns United Methodist Church, was officially chartered. The building we see today is actually the second sanctuary on this site. The original structure, built in 1951, couldn’t contain the growing congregation. So in 1958, they dedicated a brand new, larger sanctuary, a symbol of their thriving community. Today, Saint Johns United Methodist Church isn’t just a place of worship but a beacon of service to those in need. They extend their generosity to migrant workers, provide food and clothing to Metropolitan Ministries, and even contribute to the joy of the community through events like the Parks Department’s Halloween Carnival.
