Picture this. You are standing before Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa. Its history whispers from the very bricks. This isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to faith resilience and community.
Founded in 1925 by Reverend Andrew Mack Woodard Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church began as a small storefront church. It was a time of great change in Tampa. The city was growing its population booming. Woodard’s vision however was focused on something deeper. He sought to build a spiritual foundation in the heart of College Hill.
The church faced challenges. The Great Depression tested the congregation’s faith. Yet Saint Johns persevered. It moved to its current location in 1928 a small wooden structure a far cry from the impressive edifice you see today. Woodard’s dedication inspired his followers. They worked tirelessly building a strong community. He and his wife Beatrice later left to continue their missionary work.
Reverend Dr Flagger G Hilton took over in 1949. His leadership marked a period of explosive growth. The congregation expanded from a few dozen to hundreds. New ministries were established. In 1953 the church moved into its first concrete building. This was a significant step for Saint Johns a symbol of its increasing influence in Tampa.
Pastor Hilton’s vision continued. In 1984 the current building was constructed. This magnificent structure complete with a baptismal pool became a landmark in the community. Hilton’s 42 years of service shaped the church’s identity. He ordained 25 ministers many of whom went on to lead other churches.
In 1992 Reverend Dr Bartholomew Banks Sr became pastor. He continued the church’s growth and community outreach. He served as president of the Progressive Missionary and Education Baptist State Convention of Florida. His commitment to the community earned him recognition and an honorary doctorate.
Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church stands today as a vibrant center of faith and service. It’s a place where history and community intertwine. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith.
