Why did a small group of Lutherans in Washington D.C. decide to buy an old Episcopal church? Let’s uncover the story of Saint Johns Lutheran Church. It all began in 1936 with a congregation known as “First Lutheran.” Led by Reverend Theodore Heimarck, they sought a permanent home. They purchased the former St. John’s Episcopal Church building. This interesting turn of events gave Saint Johns Lutheran Church its name. The “St. John’s” inscription above the doorway of their newly acquired building seemed like a sign. The 74 charter members of Saint Johns Lutheran Church quickly grew to 525 in just 15 years. This growth prompted the construction of a new church building in 1957. It was dedicated on September 28, 1958. The congregation continued to expand, welcoming another 223 members in the next nine years. This led to a second phase of construction. A fellowship hall, chapel, nursery, and office space were added. Classrooms and storage areas were also included in a new south basement. The additions, along with a newly erected cross tower, were dedicated in 1970. Saint Johns Lutheran Church stands as a testament to the growth and dedication of its congregation.
