Listen closely. The story of Saint John’s Episcopal Church Lafayette Square is far richer than meets the eye. Standing before you is not just a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and American history.

Established in 1815 Saint John’s was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. He also designed parts of the US Capitol building. Latrobe envisioned a simple Greek cross design. The cornerstone was laid in September 1815. The first service was held in October 1816. A portico and bell tower followed. The bell in that tower? Cast by Paul Revere’s son. A true piece of history hanging proudly.

Saint John’s is known as the Church of the Presidents. Every president since James Madison has worshipped within these walls. Many were regular attendees. Abraham Lincoln was a frequent visitor finding solace in the quiet evenings during the Civil War. He often sat in an inconspicuous back pew. President Madison started the tradition of a president’s pew. He chose pew 28 initially. After renovations the pew number changed but the tradition remains. The current president’s pew is pew 54.

The church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s been a witness to pivotal moments. In June 2020 it stood at the center of protests against police brutality. It became a symbol of grace and healing during those tumultuous days. It continues to strive for justice equity and racial reconciliation. The church faced adversity. A fire damaged the basement during the protests. However Saint John’s remains a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience.

More than a church Saint John’s is a powerful symbol of our nation’s past present and future. It’s a place where presidents have sought solace ordinary people have found comfort and where the spirit of hope continues to burn bright. Its history is a reminder that faith and community can endure even in the face of immense challenges. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and contemplate the stories it holds. Let the legacy of Saint John’s Episcopal Church Lafayette Square inspire you.
