Doesn’t this steeple of Saint John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church look magnificent? The parish history is quite interesting. Saint John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church wasn’t always its own parish. It began as a mission of St. Peter’s Parish in Harpers Ferry. That lasted for over 20 years. Then it became a mission of St. James in Falls Church until 1926.

Its growth reflects the Church’s response to the community’s needs. This is especially true considering Loudoun County’s rapid expansion. The “Little Church” on King Street had several names. These included Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Lourdes.

In 1878, it was a simple structure. It measured about 25 feet by 40 feet. Norris and Sons built it using hand tools without electricity. It held about 80 to 100 people. After almost 50 years, the Chapel was enlarged in 1927. The back wall was extended by 20 feet creating a sanctuary. Wings were added forming a small transept. It was renamed Saint John the Apostle. It became an independent parish at that time.

From 1936 to 1939, Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church underwent major renovations. It was transformed into a historically accurate medieval French chapel. A soaring Gothic spire was added to its steeple. Today Eucharistic Adoration is still held at the chapel. Its preserved past makes it a privilege to visit.

A cemetery was added in the late 1980s. A Parish Center was completed in 1992. It housed offices classrooms and a preschool. The Catholic community grew. The space became too small. Overflow from Sunday Masses filled the narthex. Plans for a new Church began in the early 2000s. Groundbreaking occurred in 2010. The new Church was dedicated in August 2012.

The parish property is park-like in Leesburg’s historic section. It includes the Church the Chapel and the Rectory House. The Parish Center and Cemetery are also here. Saint John the Apostle Parish is a thriving community of Faith. The Catholic Church’s presence has responded to the people’s needs for many years.

Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church has a Romanesque style with Gothic influences. Inside is a 1100-seat nave in a Latin cross plan. Vaulted ambulatories and classical moldings adorn the space. The marble altar and reredos were salvaged from another church. They add to the church’s beauty.

The twin copper bell towers are quite striking. They feature asymmetrical spires. This building is approximately 29000 square feet. It includes a balcony narthex sacristy and baptistery. An adjoining parish hall was also built. It serves the community well.
