“A beacon of English-language Orthodoxy in Vancouver” That’s how many describe Saint John of Shanghai Orthodox Church. This unassuming church holds a rich history. Founded on August 15 2005 it began as a daughter parish of Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in Langley. Initially it served as the sole English-speaking Orthodox church in Vancouver.
The journey of Saint John of Shanghai Orthodox Church is unique. It started as a mission. Then in 2008 it merged with Saint Nina of Georgia Orthodox Mission. This created Saint John of Shanghai and Saint Nina of Georgia Orthodox Church a mouthful of a name for a small but growing congregation.
Initially services were held in a former Franciscan convent in East Vancouver. It was a historic building on Napier and Semlin streets. The church was located across from St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. This location served the community well for many years.
However the church’s home was not to last. Redevelopment plans emerged. The community faced the possibility of displacement. Providence intervened. In 2022 Saint Martin’s Anglican Church in North Vancouver closed. This presented an unexpected opportunity. Saint John of Shanghai Orthodox Church moved to this beautiful building.
Now located at 195 East Windsor Road in North Vancouver. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of its members. Their resilience reflects the strength of their beliefs. It continues to serve as the only fully English-speaking Orthodox church in greater Vancouver. Its new location is more visible and accessible. It’s a significant change for this unique church. Its story is one of adaptation perseverance and faith.
Today Saint John of Shanghai Orthodox Church welcomes all. It maintains its focus on providing Orthodox Christian worship to English speakers in the area. It’s a place to encounter the rich tradition of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Visitors are welcome to come and see for themselves. The church offers services on Saturdays and Sundays.
