Seven stars danced the night Saint John of Nepomuk was murdered. Welcome to the story of Saint John of Nepomuk. Myths, legends, and real facts intertwine. They bring the story of this revered saint to life right before us.

Saint John of Nepomuk studied at Prague and Padua Universities. In 1387, under King Wenceslas IV, he became vicar-general to the Bishop of Prague. He was a worthy man in the clergy. He refused the bishop’s position many times. He felt others were more deserving.

Legend says King Wenceslas IV planned to reward an unworthy cleric. Saint John convinced monks to elect a new abbot. This angered the King. Saint John was accused of treachery. He was imprisoned with the archbishop. The archbishop escaped but Saint John of Nepomuk was tortured. His body was thrown into the Vltava River.

That very night, seven stars appeared. They hovered over the spot where he drowned. Another story claims King Wenceslas IV was a jealous man. He suspected his wife of infidelity. He asked Saint John to reveal the Queen’s confession. Saint John refused. The king had him murdered and thrown into the river.

Saint John Wolfin, born in Nepomuk, was canonized in 1729. He became the patron saint of discretion, floods, and slander. Here on Charles Bridge, touching the statue of Saint John is a Prague ritual. It is said to bring good luck. It ensures your return to Prague.

Walk towards the Old Town. Find the cross with five stars on the bridge’s left parapet. This marks the spot where Saint John was thrown into the water in 1393. Legend says stars appeared as he touched the water. Touch the cross and stars with your left hand. Make a wish. It is said to come true.

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is the shiniest on the bridge. Why is that? Because everyone touches it. Touch the relief with the dog. It will bring you good luck. Touch the other. You will soon return to Prague. Some say students polished the reliefs like a recession. But it is better to believe the legend works.

Further towards the Old Town, find the lattice with Saint John’s figure falling. There is also a bronze cross with five stars. Touch each star with your left-hand fingers. Place your right palm on Saint John’s figure. It is said your wish will come true.

Look at the pavement. Find the small brass point. It is an energy point. Step on it. Feel the warmth and energy enter your body. There are similar points in St. Vitus Cathedral. For your wish to come true, touch the lattice and stars. Step on the energy point with your right foot. It is said whatever you want will come true.

Saint John of Nepomuk stands as a symbol of courage. He embodies unwavering faith and the price of loyalty. His story echoes through the centuries. It reminds us of the power of belief and the importance of standing up for what is right. As you leave this place, carry with you the spirit of Saint John of Nepomuk. May his story inspire you to live with integrity and conviction.
