Standing before this magnificent structure, you’re transported centuries back in time, to the early 13th century, when King Wenceslas I, inspired by the life of Saint Gall, decided to build a church in his honor. The area around the church, known as Gallusstadt, quickly grew into a thriving German quarter within the Old Town.

Saint Gall’s legacy is woven through the very fabric of this church. It was originally built in Romanesque style, but later transformed into the Gothic beauty we see today. Its grand facade reflects a time when the city was at its zenith, a period marked by artistic and architectural flourishes. Its history, however, doesn’t end there. In the 1353, Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, made a significant move: he acquired Saint Gall’s skull, said to be the saint’s own, which was then placed in the church. Considered a holy relic, it further elevated the status of Saint Gall, making it a pilgrimage site and a place of profound reverence.

A curious fact? Saint Gall’s name doesn’t appear on the church’s official name plate. Instead, it is known as “Kostel svatého Havla,” a Czech translation of Saint Gall’s name. This may seem like a minor detail, but it reveals a captivating story of how the saint’s legacy was seamlessly integrated into the Czech cultural landscape.
