The soaring glass facade of Saint Gabriel Parish catches the sunlight. It’s breathtaking.

Welcome to Saint Gabriel Parish a place steeped in history and faith. Established in 1951 by the Passionist Community of Canada at the behest of Cardinal McGuigan the parish initially encompassed a vast area. This included land now occupied by several other parishes. Imagine a farmer’s field. That’s where the original church stood.

The cornerstone was laid in 1952. The church was consecrated in 1953. The original building served the community for over fifty years. Growth in North York was explosive. The parish grew too. Its congregation became increasingly diverse reflecting the area’s changing population.

By the turn of the millennium the original church was showing its age. Repairs became costly. Development along the Sheppard subway line further increased the population density. The Passionists saw a need for a new building. They envisioned a church that reflected their ecological commitments.

The new Saint Gabriel Parish church was completed in 2006. It’s a stunning example of modern architecture. It’s Canada’s first LEED Gold certified worship space. The design is inspired by Father Thomas Berry’s eco-theology. This theology emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. The church’s large glass facade is a visual manifestation of this philosophy. It connects the sacred space within to the world outside. The interior is flooded with natural light filtered through stained glass. This creates a dynamic play of colour throughout the day.

This isn’t just a church. It’s a symbol of environmental stewardship. It’s a space that celebrates the beauty and wonder of creation. The landscaping around the church includes indigenous plants. Rainwater is collected from the roof and used for irrigation. Even the recycled pews from the original church now embrace a sacred north-south axis.

The new Saint Gabriel Parish is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community hub. It reflects the faith and values of its congregation. It’s a testament to the vision of those who built it. It’s a place of worship that embraces the past and looks to the future.
