Saint Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church

From a simple schoolhouse to a grand church, that’s the story of Saint Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church. Here in Lavender Bay, this beautiful sandstone structure stands as a testament to faith and architectural brilliance. Saint Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church wasn’t always a church. It began its life in 1881 as a Catholic school, designed by the renowned architect William W Wardell. Imagine children filling these now sacred spaces, their voices echoing through the halls where hymns are now sung. Wardell, known for his Gothic Revival style, crafted the building with a sandstone frame and a slate roof, topped with a distinctive copper spire. The church we see today retains that original charm, a tangible link to Sydney’s past. In 1964, the church underwent a significant transformation. A stunning stained-glass window, a masterpiece by Stephen Moore, was installed. This vibrant window, measuring an impressive 20 by 5 meters, floods the church with colorful light, adding a modern touch to Wardell’s classic design. The same year also saw the addition of the arched colonnade facing MacKenzie Street, enhancing the church’s grandeur. Saint Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church also housed a historic organ. Built in 1864 by J.W. Walker of London for St Mary’s Anglican Church in Waverley, the organ found a new home here around 1890. After a restoration in the 1960s by A. Jones, the organ was eventually moved to Tyburn Convent in Riverstone in 1988. Although the organ is gone, its music surely resonated within these walls for decades, filling the air with sacred melodies.
