Picture this. You stand before the Saint Francis Xavier Chinese Catholic Centre. Its modern architecture contrasts sharply with the rich history within. This isn’t just a church it’s a vibrant hub of the Chinese Catholic community in Vancouver.
The Saint Francis Xavier Chinese Catholic Centre boasts a history spanning nearly a century. It began humbly in 1933 in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Father Hugh Sharkey and the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society nurtured a small but growing congregation. The Grey Nuns of Pembroke played a vital role offering love and support. This humble beginning paved the way for the center we see today.
In 1962 a significant milestone occurred. Father Peter Chow became the first Chinese priest to serve the Saint Francis Xavier Church. This marked a pivotal moment in the parish’s identity strengthening its connection to the local Chinese community. This was a huge step in making the church feel more like home to its growing congregation.
Father Aloysius Lou’s leadership from 1975 onwards proved transformative. He established Happy Manor a senior’s home a testament to the church’s dedication to caring for its elderly members. He also oversaw the construction of a new daycare reflecting the church’s commitment to families. Father Lou’s vision extended beyond spiritual guidance. His tireless work created a community centre encompassing the church school and daycare all under one roof.
The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from Hong Kong joined the community in 1975. Sister Veronica Tang and Sister Agatha Poon were the first Chinese sisters at Saint Francis Xavier. Their presence further enriched the cultural tapestry of the parish. Sadly Sister Tang passed away just over a week after arriving.
The original church on Princess Avenue was eventually sold in 2004. But Father Lou’s dream of a unified campus remained. In 2008 the current Saint Francis Xavier Chinese Catholic Centre opened its doors on Great Northern Way complete with underground parking a testament to the community’s growth and enduring faith. The opening brought together all the community needs under one roof just as Father Lou had envisioned.
The Saint Francis Xavier Chinese Catholic Centre is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community spirit. It’s a place where history is celebrated and the future is embraced. A place where generations have found solace support and a deeper connection to their faith. It continues to serve as a beacon of hope and community for the Chinese Catholic community of Vancouver. A legacy built on faith love and service.
