Founded in 1927 by the residents of Caulfeild, Saint Francis in the Woods began as a humble gathering space for a small community. They yearned for a permanent place of worship. Before its construction, services were held in the homes of the villagers. In late 1927, the community rallied together to build the church that stands today.
The original building, smaller and simpler than the current structure, was consecrated on New Year’s Day, 1928, by the Archbishop of New Westminster. The church was dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, whose love for nature and reverence for all living creatures resonated deeply with the community.
The name itself, Saint Francis in the Woods, beautifully reflects the church’s tranquil setting. The surrounding forest mirrors the life of Saint Francis, a man who embraced the natural world as a reflection of God’s love. Today, you can find the Lych Gate, a traditional structure with roots tracing back to the 14th century. This covered walkway was originally meant for resting the bier and pallbearers on their way to the graveyard. Look around for the Memorial Garden, dedicated in 1973, and the Meditation Garden, dedicated in 2008. Both are testaments to the enduring spirit of faith and connection with the natural world.
