St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish started as a mission of St. Jerome Parish in Hyattsville in the early 1940s. It soon grew into its own parish. Now, priests from the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo administer it. They are also known as the Scalabrinians.
In the early 1990s, Spanish-speaking residents wanted Spanish-language Masses. St. James Parish and St. Mark Parish offered these Masses. However, new Metro routes made it hard for parishioners to attend. St. Bernard’s embraced the opportunity to offer Spanish-language Masses.
Cardinal Gregory noted the unity and love of Christ at St. Bernard of Clairvaux. He praised the parish as an example of cultures living together in peace. This unity stems from a deep respect for diversity.
St. Bernard’s has seen a rise in its young Hispanic population over the last two decades. Many children and young people participate in the parish’s programs. Alejandra Lainez coordinates young adult activities. She believes that parish involvement allows young people to shape the Church’s future.
The parish celebrates special events for Hispanic Catholics. These include the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Three Kings’ Day. They also celebrate Posadas and Via Crucis.
Juan Gonzáles has witnessed the growth of the Hispanic community. He notes their ability to live in harmony with other language speakers. Other ethnic groups have joined St. Bernard’s. These include Catholics from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Africa.
Parishioners decorated the church with flags from various countries. These included the United States, Mexico, and Vietnam. Altars honored St. Bernard and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Father Richard Gerard called St. Bernard’s Parish a family. Teresa Luna, a longtime parishioner, feels it is her second home. She continues to attend even after moving away.
