Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Santa Fe’s history, Saint Anne Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and a touch of divine intervention. Saint Anne Catholic Church isn’t just a building; it’s a story etched in stone and stained glass. A story that whispers of answered prayers and unwavering devotion. The tale begins, not within these hallowed walls, but on the shores of Last Island, Louisiana, in 1856. A devastating storm swept across the land, claiming hundreds of lives, including many from Assumption Parish. Among the survivors were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Foley of Napoleonville. Clinging to life amidst the raging waters, Mrs. Foley, a devout Catholic, prayed fervently for deliverance. Her husband, not of the same faith, made a promise: if her prayers were answered, he would embrace her religion. They were rescued eleven days later, a testament to Mrs. Foley’s unwavering faith. Though Mr. Foley passed away later, his promise lived on through his wife. Marcelite M. Blanchard Foley, remembering her husband’s vow, donated the land upon which the first Catholic Church in Napoleonville would be built. This church, originally named St. Napoleon, was completed in 1874. As the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger space. A new church was completed in 1909. Its name, Saint Anne, honored the saint to whom the community had prayed during a yellow fever epidemic. Their prayers were answered, and the name became a symbol of gratitude and protection. The Saint Anne Catholic Church that stands before you today is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. Its red brick facade, arched windows, and prominent tower create a striking presence. The interior, adorned with Corinthian capitals, a vaulted ceiling, and intricate details, whispers of the rich history within. In 1996, the church underwent extensive restoration. The project, costing $407,000, breathed new life into the aging structure. Artisans meticulously restored the ceiling’s 23-karat gold leaf designs, the fluted columns, and the decorative frieze, preserving the church’s artistic heritage. The symbolism woven into the design is captivating. The egg and dart motif represents the cycle of life and death, while the bead and reel, with its crosses, speaks of eternity and faith. The Italian marble altars, the mosaic Last Supper scene, and the stained-glass windows, each donated by families of the congregation, add layers of beauty and devotion to this sacred space. Saint Anne Catholic Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the power of faith, the resilience of a community, and the enduring beauty of sacred art.
