Whispers of a dream echo within these walls. The dream belongs to Father Gheorghe Calciu. Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church stands as a testament to his vision.
Father Calciu, imprisoned for his faith, envisioned a traditional Romanian Orthodox church. He wanted it to be a monument for Romanians in the United States. His dream ignited a spark in parishioners. They worked to make it a reality.
The journey of Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church began in 2004. After surveys and meetings, land was purchased in Potomac, Maryland. It happened on November 30, 2005. This day celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle. He became the church’s protector.
Father Calciu passed away in 2006. However, his spirit lived on. In 2009, the Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church was officially established. It was incorporated as a religious non-profit in Maryland.
The architectural design evolved. It moved to resemble the Moldovita Monastery style. By June 2014, the land plat was recorded. Father Cosmin Antonescu was appointed parish priest on November 1, 2014.
For a time, the community rented space. They used the gym hall of the “7 Locks” Elementary School for Sunday services. Weekday services found a home at St. Luca Serbian Orthodox Church.
In 2016, construction began. It was for the “Father Gheorghe Calciu-Dumitreasa Cultural Center.” A modular unit provided a place of worship. In 2017, the church obtained permission to use it.
Since then, the Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church has thrived. Liturgical services have flourished. Baptisms and weddings have increased. In 2019, the process began to get a building permit for the main church. The parish celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church extends a warm welcome. It invites visitors to experience traditional Romanian Orthodox worship. Services are held on Sundays at 10:00 am.
The church is active in the community. It hosts a Romanian Food Festival. This festival showcases Romanian food, music, art and culture. It is held on the church grounds.
Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church has ongoing campaigns. “Donate Porcelain for the Bride of Christ” invites donations for floor tiles. “Rejoice, Door of Heaven” seeks support for a Maramures style gate. The “Entering the Church” campaign aims to raise funds for construction.
The community is building a house for God. They invite everyone to contribute to the growth of Christ’s Church. Saint Andrew Romanian Orthodox Church embodies faith. It represents community and Romanian heritage. It is a place where dreams become reality.
