Sai Tso Wan, now a peaceful neighborhood near Lam Tin, holds a dramatic secret in its past. It was here in 1522 that a pivotal naval battle took place, forever shaping the relationship between Ming Dynasty China and Portugal. This battle, known as the Battle of Xicaowan, wasn’t about territorial conquest. It was a clash of cultures, a collision of ambition and misunderstanding. Sai Tso Wan was the stage for this dramatic showdown. The Portuguese, led by Martim Afonso de Mello, arrived with six caravels, seeking to establish a foothold in Tunmen and expand their trade influence. However, their arrival was met with suspicion and hostility. The previous actions of Portuguese traders, like Simão de Andrade, had soured relations with the Chinese. Simão’s alleged involvement in kidnapping Chinese children and ignoring Chinese authority created a tense atmosphere. These actions, coupled with rumors of cannibalism, fueled Chinese animosity towards the Portuguese. The Ming Dynasty, already wary of Portuguese intentions after their conquest of Malacca, a Chinese ally, saw Martim’s arrival as a threat. The stage was set for conflict at Sai Tso Wan. The ensuing battle was fierce. Chinese junks, armed with powerful cannons, clashed with the Portuguese caravels. The Chinese artillery, aided by the expertise of Yang San and Dai Ming, proved devastating. One Portuguese ship was destroyed by an exploding gunpowder magazine, and another was captured. Martim Afonso, defeated, retreated to Malacca. The Battle of Xicaowan at Sai Tso Wan had far-reaching consequences. The captured Portuguese sailors were executed, and the seized Portuguese cannons were reverse-engineered by the Chinese, bolstering their military capabilities. This clash at Sai Tso Wan underscored the growing tensions between East and West, a clash that would continue to shape the region for centuries to come. Today, Sai Tso Wan stands as a testament to this dramatic historical event.
