Could this be the most scenic spot in Sai Kung East? Many think Sai Tam is one of the best spots in all of Hong Kong. Sai Tam is also known as Tai Long Sai Wan. This translates to West Bay. But to avoid confusion with other bays, it is called Tai Long Sai Wan.

Sai Tam earned first place in the Hong Kong Best 10 Scenic Sites Election in 2006. This recognition highlights its stunning natural beauty. Its white sand and clear blue waters define Sai Tam. Its relative inaccessibility helps preserve its unspoiled charm. Sai Tam is quiet and pure. Only junk-trippers and hikers usually visit.

Let’s dive into Sai Tam’s history. The Li family settled in Tai Long Wan between 1465 and 1487. Sai Tam served as a typhoon shelter for fishing boats. The High Island Reservoir project changed this. It blocked the shortcut channel.

Now look toward the Star of the Sea Mass Centre. It stands as one of Sai Kung Peninsula’s historic churches. The Star of the Sea Mass Centre was first built in 1953. It was rebuilt in 1963 and restored in 2021. Next to it is the Hoi Sing School.

Be mindful of the waters around Sai Tam. Tai Long Wan means Big Wave Bay in Cantonese. This hints at strong currents. The beaches here are not ideal for swimming. Strong rip currents exist year-round. These currents can pull swimmers out to sea. Many drowning incidents have occurred because of these rip currents.

In 2001 a 49-year-old firefighter drowned while rescuing a teen. In 2002 a 25-year-old firefighter drowned swimming from a yacht. In 2005 a 52-year-old manager drowned swimming to a yacht. In 2009 a 19-year-old student drowned after being swept away. In 2021 a 70-year-old man drowned offshore. These tragic events serve as a reminder of the bay’s dangers.

Despite the risks, Sai Tam remains popular. Johny Lee, a diving instructor, notes the clear water. He said that it is great for observing marine life. The strong currents, however, demand caution.

In 2010 Sai Tam faced development controversy. A large private development began behind the bay. Businessman Simon Lo acquired land for the project. This sparked public outcry. Over 68000 people joined a Facebook group to oppose the development. Green groups planned protest hikes. Conservationists worried about UNESCO World Heritage status.

The government responded to the concerns. Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau visited the site. He emphasized balancing private land rights and environmental protection. The government promised to work with the landowner.

Peter Li of the Conservancy Association expressed disappointment. Paul Zimmerman called for land control near country parks. Environmentalists urged repossession of private land. Secretary for Development Carrie Lam said the government would not repossess land due to public outcry.

Today Sai Tam continues to attract visitors. It is a reminder of nature’s beauty and power. It highlights the importance of respecting the environment. Remember its history and heed the warnings. Then you can truly appreciate Sai Tam.
