Have you ever seen a place so small yet so full of history? Welcome to Sai Ap Chau Teng. This tiny island is a hidden gem nestled in Crooked Harbour. It’s a place where the whispers of the past still echo. Sai Ap Chau Teng’s story begins not with grand monuments but with humble fishermen.
In the 1920s Tanka fishermen found refuge here. They used the island for essential tasks. They dried their nets and repaired their boats. Sai Ap Chau Teng was merely a temporary stop. However soon these temporary stops turned into permanent homes. Informal settlements sprang up. These were the first seeds of a village. Sai Ap Chau Teng was slowly becoming a community.
The 1940s saw significant change. Following the shift in power in mainland China the True Jesus Church relocated. They built a wooden church on Sai Ap Chau Teng in 1952. This became a beacon of hope for many fishermen. The church drew the community together. It provided a place of worship and a central point in their lives. The small wooden church was later replaced by a more permanent concrete structure in 1965. This demonstrates the community’s growth and stability. Sai Ap Chau Teng evolved from a temporary anchorage to a thriving community.
The arrival of the church wasn’t the only turning point. In 1960 a fresh water supply was installed thanks to the United States CARE program. Locals worked alongside the British Military to lay underground pipes. Water was brought from a reservoir. This improved the lives of the islanders immensely. The creation of the Ap Chau Fishermen village in 1961 marked another milestone. Supported by the United States CARE program and the British Government this signaled a step towards modernization. A primary school opened in 1958. Sai Ap Chau Teng was creating its own infrastructure.
Sai Ap Chau Teng’s population peaked at over 700 inhabitants. However many moved to cities in the United Kingdom during the 1960s and 1970s. Today Sai Ap Chau Teng is much quieter. It has a small number of permanent residents. Yet its history still resonates.
The Ap Chau Story Room opened in 2018. Located within the abandoned primary school it now shares Sai Ap Chau Teng’s unique story. The Duck’s Eye Sea Arch is a natural wonder. It is a testament to the power of nature. Sai Ap Chau Teng is not only a place of historical significance but also a beautiful natural landscape. It is a place where you can see the past meet the present. A place where the echoes of history are still heard today. Sai Ap Chau Teng truly deserves to be explored.
