Slithering through Warsaw’s heart, the Sadurka whispers tales of a bygone era. This unassuming pond, the Sadurka, holds the memory of a much larger entity. It’s a remnant of a river that once flowed freely, shaping the very landscape and settlements around it. Imagine the Sadurka, not as a still pond, but as a vibrant river, its waters coursing through what are now bustling districts like Włochy, Ochota, Mokotów, Ursynów, and Wilanów. The Sadurka’s source, somewhere between Czyste and Włochy, fed its journey southwards, past Szczczęśliwice, Rakowiec, and Okęcie.

The river Sadurka played a crucial role in the development of early Warsaw. Settlements like Porzucewo, Sopęchy (present-day Włochy), Stenclewice (Szczęśliwice), Okęcie, Służewiec, Służew, Raków, and Rakowiec sprang up along its banks, drawing life from its waters. The Sadurka even embraced the eastern edge of what is now Warsaw Chopin Airport, a far cry from the concrete expanse we see today. Its waters eventually merged with the Wilanów Lake before joining the Vistula River near Wilanów. The Sadurka’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Its course and length shifted over the centuries. Its flow was altered by human intervention, first in the late 17th century to supply water to the Wilanów Palace and its surrounding park. Later, in the 18th century, its course was temporarily diverted north to feed the ponds of the Royal Baths. The construction of the Warsaw-Vienna railway in the 19th century significantly reduced the water flow in the Sadurka’s upper reaches.

By the late 19th century, much of the river had been regulated and channeled. Its waters even filled the pits left by brickyards in Szczczęśliwice, forming the Szczczęśliwice Clay Pits. The 20th century brought further changes. After 1916, when most of the Sadurka’s catchment area fell within Warsaw’s administrative boundaries, the river was largely rebuilt and straightened. Much of it was also covered over due to the expansion of Okęcie Airport. As recently as the 20th century, the Sadurka would reappear in Okęcie after heavy rains, a testament to its enduring presence beneath the surface. This phenomenon, however, ceased after the area was fully drained. Today, a street on the edge of Szczczęśliwicki Park, once called Nowosolipsowska, bears the name Sadurka, a tribute to the lost river. The Sadurka may no longer flow as a river, but its legacy lives on, not only in the pond that bears its name but also in the very fabric of Warsaw. It’s a story of adaptation, resilience, and the enduring power of nature, whispered by the quiet waters of the Sadurka pond.
