Gazing upwards at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s steeple, one might imagine it whispering stories of Randwick’s past. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church stands as a testament to the evolving narrative of this Sydney suburb. It has witnessed Randwick’s transformation from a fashionable 19th-century enclave to the vibrant community it is today. The initial structure, a brick school church designed by Aston Watkins, held a mere 300 souls. In 1885, Cardinal Moran entrusted the parish to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Soon, the burgeoning congregation outgrew this modest space. Architects Sheerin and Hennessy, along with builder Eaton of North Sydney, answered the call. In 1888, they unveiled the new Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church. This elegant structure, now the nave of the present church, was hailed as one of Sydney’s finest, second only to the Cathedral. Built in the neo-Gothic style, the church proudly displays stained-glass windows crafted in Tours, France, depicting the life of Jesus. These luminous works of art, donated by parishioners, add a touch of timeless beauty to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Old photographs reveal the original interior. They showcase two altars, one of which serves as the main altar today. They also capture the altar in the shrine and the Sacred Heart statue now residing in the right transept. By the end of World War I, expansion became necessary. Hennessy returned to complete his vision. He designed the transept, sanctuary, high altar, side altars, sacristy, and a new school. Three large stained glass windows were added, complementing the existing artwork. The church we admire today is largely thanks to this period of growth. One of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s most striking features is its grand eastern window. Designed by Alexander Gascoyne and crafted by John Hardman and Sons of Birmingham, the window floods the sanctuary with vibrant light. The final touch was the Shrine to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. A dream of Fathers Treand and Smith, the shrine serves as a beautiful memorial to their dedication. Over the years, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been lovingly maintained and renewed. Renovations in 2008 included the creation of the narthex and updates to the lighting and sound system. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant hub of the Randwick Catholic community. It is a place where stories are shared, faith is nurtured, and history comes alive.
