From a single seed, a mighty tree grows. This is the story of the Sackler School of Medicine, formerly known as such. It stands as a testament to the growth of medical education in Israel. Now known as the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Tel Aviv University, its roots trace back to 1964. The Sackler School of Medicine wasn’t always its name. It was named after three brothers: Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond Sackler. These medical professionals made significant donations to the school. The Sackler name, however, became entangled in controversy related to their pharmaceutical company, Purdue Pharma, and its drug OxyContin. This led to public pressure and calls to remove the Sackler name from the school. In 2022, the school removed the name from its US-facing program. By 2024, after reaching an agreement with the Sackler family, the name was officially changed to the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The Sackler School of Medicine, despite its name change, continues its legacy. The institution has consistently been ranked among the top 200 medical schools worldwide by the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Beyond the medical school, the faculty encompasses several other schools. These include the School of Public Health, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions. The New York State/American Program, established in 1976, provides medical education in English for US and Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The program offers a curriculum modeled after US medical schools, with clinical clerkships and electives in American institutions. The Sackler School of Medicine, now the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, continues to evolve. It stands as a vital center for medical education and research in Israel. Its story is one of growth, adaptation, and a commitment to training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
