Established in 1978, the S.I.S.S.A. – International School for Advanced Studies is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the resilience of Trieste. The school was born from the aftermath of the 1976 Friuli earthquake. While Trieste itself was spared, physicist Paolo Budinich saw an opportunity amidst the devastation. He successfully petitioned the Italian government to create this advanced studies institution. S.I.S.S.A. was modeled after the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and initially focused on theoretical physics, with Budinich himself at the helm. Imagine the intellectual energy that must have filled these halls in those early days. S.I.S.S.A. – International School for Advanced Studies expanded under the leadership of Daniele Amati, who took over in 1986. Amati, former head of the theoretical division at CERN, broadened the school’s horizons to include neuroscience. He also spearheaded the creation of an interdisciplinary laboratory, bridging the gap between humanities and scientific studies. The S.I.S.S.A. – International School for Advanced Studies has seen numerous directors shape its path, each leaving their mark. From geneticist Edoardo Boncinelli to physicist Stefano Fantoni, these leaders have driven the growth and development of this institution. Did you know that S.I.S.S.A. even publishes scientific journals? These include the Journal of High Energy Physics, the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, and the Journal of Science Communication. This demonstrates the school’s commitment to disseminating knowledge and fostering scientific discourse. S.I.S.S.A. now occupies a modern campus. But until 2010, it was located near the beautiful Miramare Park. The school’s current campus in Opicina boasts state-of-the-art facilities. There’s even a supercomputer operated in partnership with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. S.I.S.S.A. – International School for Advanced Studies stands as a beacon of knowledge and innovation, its history intertwined with the city of Trieste.
