A melody from the past. That’s what the South African College of Music whispers. Standing before its elegant buildings you feel the weight of history. This isn’t just a music school. It’s a living legacy.

The South African College of Music SACM opened its doors in 1910. It started small just six students in Strand Street. Madame Apolline Niay-Darroll a passionate musician led the charge. She had a dream a dream of a thriving musical community in Cape Town. That dream took root. It blossomed.

The school quickly outgrew its initial space. In 1914 it moved to Stal Plein finding larger premises. Mr WH Bell became principal. His influence was immense. In 1920 he became Professor of Music at the University of Cape Town. The SACM’s integration into the university followed in 1923. Professor Bell became Dean of the Faculty of Music. This marked a turning point for the school. It secured its place within the higher education system. It elevated the standards. It strengthened its academic rigour.

In 1925 the SACM found a permanent home. Strubenholm a former private residence became its new location. Today Strubenholm is more than just a building. It’s a museum. It houses the world-renowned Kirby Collection of instruments. These instruments are beautiful. They are reminders of musical traditions across the globe. African European and Asian instruments tell their stories within these walls.

The 1970s saw further expansion. Two new buildings were added to Strubenholm. These additions were essential. They provided much needed space. The Chisholm Recital Room the Fiasconaro Room and countless practice rooms were built. A state-of-the-art music library expanded resources for students. Recording studios and a listening lab were also added. This investment in technology improved training for future musicians.

The SACM isn’t isolated. It shares a campus with the Baxter Theatre Centre. Their 638-seat Concert Hall is used regularly. The impressive Von Beckerath organ enhances many performances. It provides valuable performance experience for students.

Today the South African College of Music continues to thrive. It offers diverse programs. It trains musicians from all backgrounds. From classical music to African rhythms to jazz improvisation SACM is a melting pot. It is a place where musical dreams are nurtured and talent is honed. This institution echoes with melodies that span generations. It’s a place where history and musical innovation meet. Each note played each song sung is a continuation of this rich history. A legacy that started with a dream. A dream that continues to resonate today.
