Due to its central location Warsaw became the capital of the Commonwealth in 1596. King Sigismund III Vasa moved the court from Kraków. The town expanded into the suburbs. Aristocrats established private districts ruled by their own laws. These were called jurydyka. Praga was one such district and it received a city charter in 1648.
