Built in February 1681 Ryogokuji Temple stands proudly. It reflects the traditional grandeur of the Edo period. The fifth shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa commissioned its construction. His mother Keishōin requested the temple’s creation. Ryogokuji Temple became sacred to the natural amber Nyoirin-Kanzeon-Zo. The present Kannon-do was built quickly. The shogunate ordered its construction in January 1697. It was completed within half a year. The opening ceremony was held in August of the same year. The main building is a large hall. It houses a collection of art dating back to the Genroku period. Ryogokuji Temple is said to be the most magnificent in Tokyo. Remarkably it survived an earthquake and war.
