Isn’t it remarkable that a church founded in 1843 still thrives today? That’s the story of Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church. Founded in Southwest Washington, Ryland Church started its journey in 1843. It’s a testament to faith and community.

Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church stands as a beacon of hope in Southeast Washington D.C. In 1940, Ryland Church purchased land. Four years later in 1944, the Neo-Gothic sanctuary we see today was erected.

But the story of Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church doesn’t end there. In 1973, Epworth Church, originally in Northeast, faced closure. Ryland Church opened its doors to them. This act of solidarity strengthened the church community.

Then, in 1977, Anacostia United Methodist Church closed after 133 years. The congregation joined Ryland Epworth UMC, further enriching the church’s history.

Today, Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church continues to grow. It aims to be a Christ-centered community. The church focuses on developing spirit-filled disciples who make other disciples. This furthers the Kingdom of God.

The beliefs of Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church are rooted in faithful Christian witness. They critically reflect on biblical and theological inheritance. They express their faith in contemporary ways.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Holdbrook-Smith has been serving Ryland Epworth UMC since July 1, 2018. He hails from Ghana, West Africa. He is a Holy Spirit-empowered preacher and teacher. He holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Liberty University School of Theology. He also holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church is located at 3200 S Street SE. This is at the corner of Pennsylvania Ave SE and Branch Ave SE. You can find engaging worship services every Sunday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Virtual services are also available via Zoom.

With about 40 members, Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church serves the Hillcrest and Randle Highlands neighborhoods. Its vision is clear. It strives to be a healthy and growing community.
