What inspired the creation of the Ryba Sculpture? We stand before the Ryba Sculpture, a reinforced concrete artwork by Eleonora Haragsimovà, completed in 1965. The sculpture’s name, “Ryba,” meaning “fish” in Czech, offers a subtle hint to its connection with Jakub Jan Ryba, the composer of the beloved “Czech Christmas Mass.” Though not a direct representation of the composer himself, the sculpture’s fish motif links to the traditional Czech Christmas meal of carp. This connection celebrates Ryba’s musical legacy, deeply intertwined with the Christmas season. Ryba, born in 1765, composed over 1,400 pieces, ranging from masses and songs to concertos and symphonies. His “Czech Christmas Mass,” or “Rybovka,” as it’s affectionately known, depicts a charming village scene. A farmhand awakens his master, sharing news of a celestial light. Initially grumpy, the master eventually rises to witness the Star of Bethlehem. This piece became a cornerstone of Czech Christmas celebrations. Ryba’s life, however, was marked by tragedy. Facing mounting pressures and struggling to support his large family, he took his own life in 1815. Initially denied a burial in the city cemetery, his remains were later moved by his son, offering a measure of peace. The Ryba Sculpture, though not a literal depiction, serves as a symbolic tribute to the composer’s enduring legacy. It reminds us of the joy his music brings during the festive season, while also hinting at the poignant story of his life.
