What secrets does a sanctuary hold when it’s nestled amidst the relentless growth of a bustling town? Rust Nature Sanctuary, a haven of tranquility, stands as a testament to Margaret Rust’s vision. She foresaw the encroaching development threatening her beloved 63-acre property in Leesburg, Virginia. In 1994, she partnered with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation to protect this unique habitat. Rust Nature Sanctuary became a reality thanks to her foresight and the dedication of several organizations. After Margaret’s death, her heirs donated the land to the Audubon Naturalist Society (now Nature Forward). They, in turn, partnered with NOVA Parks to manage the grounds. This collaboration allows both organizations to focus on their strengths: conservation and education. Rust Nature Sanctuary now encompasses 68 acres. It includes an additional 5 acres of wetland acquired by ANS to protect the rare Jefferson salamander. The sanctuary offers 2.5 miles of trails winding through diverse habitats. Visitors can explore pine and hardwood forests, a tranquil pond, and a 15-acre meadow dotted with persimmon trees. It’s a surprising escape, just 200 feet from the town limits yet feeling miles away. Interpretive signs guide visitors, revealing insights into the local wildlife and the process of forest succession. Rust Nature Sanctuary isn’t just about passive appreciation. It’s a hub of vibrant educational programs. The Rust Watershed Adventures program engages local elementary students in hands-on learning about water quality and aquatic insects. These young stewards even implement projects in their own communities to improve local watersheds. For the youngest nature enthusiasts, the Fresh Air Kids program offers nature-based crafts and hikes. One memorable project saw a group of town-dwelling children planting 60 trees to create a wildlife corridor between the forest and the wetland pond. For many, it was their first experience planting a tree. Beyond the sanctuary trails, the historic Rust Manor House provides a beautiful setting for weddings and events. Rust Nature Sanctuary is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration, a place where nature thrives and inspires future generations.
