The journey of Russell Lea Public School began in 1927. Mr. J.R. Lee saw a need for a local school. Young children were walking long distances to Drummoyne Five Dock and Haberfield. The Education Department recognized the need. In March 1928 negotiations were completed. The land was purchased from Mr. E.D. Bennett for £5000. Inspector Mr Riley recommended an infants’ school. Approval was granted on 17th November 1928.
Construction was delayed due to finances. In August 1930 it became an “unemployed relief work”. The Building Construction Industrial Undertaking carried out the work. The contract was for £7449. The two-storey main building still stands today. It was built in 1930. Russell Lea Infants’ School opened in 1931. It was the largest Infants’ School in NSW. In 2016 the Minister reclassified it to a K-6 school.
