Envision yourself in 1891, amidst a nascent Sao Paulo. The Piagentini brothers, devout and driven, secured permission to build a humble chapel. This chapel, in what would become Rudge Ramos, marked a pivotal moment. Rudge Ramos wasn’t always Rudge Ramos. It started as Vila de São João da Bela Vista. For years, it was affectionately known as “Bairro dos Meninos,” or “Neighborhood of the Boys.” Local lore suggests three orphaned boys resided here before the Piagentini’s arrival. Another tale whispers of bandeirantes, the rugged pioneers, leaving their children in this area. This history is echoed throughout Rudge Ramos. You’ll find squares, social clubs, even a river, the Ribeirão dos Meninos, bearing the name. Fast forward to the 1950s. Rudge Ramos gets its modern name. It honors Dr. Arthur Rudge da Silva Ramos, a respected jurist and police delegate. He owned a large portion of land here. His only daughter, Lavínia, married Lauro Gomes, a prominent figure who later became mayor of São Bernardo do Campo. Dr. Rudge Ramos himself was instrumental in renovating the Estrada do Vergueiro between 1913 and 1916. This road, an important artery between Santos and Sao Paulo, was in dire condition. Dr. Rudge Ramos, embarrassed by its state, took it upon himself to improve it. He even used incarcerated prisoners for the labor. Upon completion, he erected two toll booths, one near the Vila Euclides cemetery and the other by the Piagentini brothers’ church, now the Largo de Rudge Ramos. Today, Rudge Ramos is a vibrant suburb of São Bernardo do Campo, the largest in the city. It houses the Rudge Ramos campus of the Methodist University, a campus of Bandeirante University, and the iconic Igreja de São João Batista. This church, often simply called the Church of Rudge Ramos, serves as a reminder of the area’s humble beginnings. From a small chapel in a developing city to a bustling hub of education and faith, Rudge Ramos embodies the spirit of progress and community.
