Have you ever heard of a wandering church? Well, Rudboda, located in the heart of Lidingö Municipality, was once home to one. Rudboda Church, built in 1972, was a unique example of what’s known as a transportable, or “wandering”, church. It was designed by Rolf Bergh, and the structure was meant to be easily moved when needed – a flexible option in a growing community like Rudboda.

You can imagine, this was a topic of much debate back in the day, and there were certainly those who cherished the quaint little structure. Its time, unfortunately, drew to a close in 2009. Rudboda Church closed its doors, leaving behind a legacy of community spirit. While the future of this iconic church is uncertain, its very existence reveals a fascinating tale of human ingenuity and changing times.

Ruddoba was once a village with a rich history, dating back to at least 1381 when it was known as “ruuddobodha”. The name originates from the fact that it was a farm built on cleared land in the area known as a “rudde”. It used to be a small village with a traditional farming community, and, over time, it evolved into the picturesque suburban area it is today.

While Rudboda church is no more, its story serves as a reminder of the evolving character of a place. Even the Rudboda square, the very center of this community, is planned for a transformation, its future a canvas waiting to be painted by time, mirroring the constant change that shapes our world.
