Sixty-five meters below our feet lies a marvel of engineering. Welcome to the Rozelle Interchange. This isn’t just any interchange. It’s Australia’s most complex underground junction a three-story labyrinth of tunnels. Imagine a subterranean city humming with vehicles.

The Rozelle Interchange opened in November 2023. It’s part of the WestConnex motorway network. It connects major Sydney arteries. The M4 and M8 motorways link here. The Iron Cove Link a toll-free bypass of Victoria Road runs through the interchange. It connects the Iron Cove Bridge and the Anzac Bridge. This impressive feat of engineering was built on the site of the old Rozelle Rail Yards. A truly massive undertaking.

The tunnels themselves are a sight to behold. Two parallel sets snake through the earth. One set primarily serves the M4. The other handles traffic from the M8. The interchange also anticipates the Western Harbour Tunnel. Stub tunnels are already in place. This expansion will be completed in 2028. The Interchange will be the southern terminus.

Above ground Rozelle Parklands have been created. This 10-hectare green space offers a welcome respite. It boasts wetlands playing fields and barbecue facilities. A shared user path connects the park to public transport. Sadly the park faced a temporary closure. Asbestos contamination in mulch caused this closure. It was swiftly reopened after remediation efforts.

But the Interchange hasn’t been without its controversies. Severe congestion plagued the area initially. The reduction of lanes leading to the Anzac Bridge added to the challenges. Misleading signage about the toll-free Iron Cove Link caused further issues. The government is addressing these issues with signage changes and other initiatives.

The Rozelle Interchange represents a significant investment in Sydney’s infrastructure. It’s a testament to human ingenuity. It’s also a reminder that even the most ambitious projects face complexities. We hope your tour of this remarkable place has been enlightening. The Rozelle Interchange a symbol of Sydney’s ongoing evolution.
