“Did someone really try to steal its tail?” Standing before you is the Royal Sweet Diamond, a life-size bronze bull sculpted by the late Canadian artist Joe Fafard. This isn’t Wall Street, though some mistakenly think so. The Royal Sweet Diamond was actually commissioned by Gordon Robert Diamond, who owns the BC Turf Building you see behind it. Diamond’s company, West Coast Reduction, deals with animal by-products. It seems fitting then that a bull, albeit a bronze one, would stand watch. The Royal Sweet Diamond was installed here in 2000, replacing an abstract horse sculpture. It hasn’t always been easy for the bull. It’s been vandalized multiple times, with people even trying to cut off its tail! The tail was reattached, of course, made even sturdier this time. The Royal Sweet Diamond stands as a testament to both artistic skill and the resilience of art in the face of mischief.
