Didn’t Royal Cape Golf Club earn its royal status due to a prince’s visit? That’s right. We are standing before Royal Cape Golf Club. It is more than just a golf course. It’s a living testament to South Africa’s rich golfing heritage.
Royal Cape Golf Club stands as the oldest golf club in South Africa. Its story began in November 1885. For two decades, the club thrived at Wynberg and Rondebosch Common. The course found its permanent home in Ottery in 1906.
King George V bestowed the “Royal” designation upon the club in 1910. This honor commemorated Prince Arthur’s visit, a son of Queen Victoria. He attended the opening of the first Union parliament in Cape Town. Royal Cape became the 36th club worldwide and fifth outside the British Isles to receive this distinction.
Dr Charles Molteno Murray redesigned the course in 1929. He shaped the tree-lined layout we see today. The colonial-style clubhouse, built in 1923, adds to the club’s charm. Prince Arthur laid the foundation stone while serving as Governor General.
Royal Cape has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments. It first hosted the SA championships in 1910. The club has hosted ten SA Opens. Gary Player broke 70 in each round in 1965. Ernie Els won in 1996.
The course presents an interesting mix of holes. All but two run in a north-south direction. The 470-metre third hole stands out as one of the country’s longest par 4s. Water hazards protect the right half of the fairway. The 14th hole is a signature par 4 with a sharp dogleg around a fairway bunker.
Royal Cape’s greens are known for their consistency. The fairways are well-maintained. The club also boasts a full-size driving range and short-game practice area. Wayne Bradley serves as the club pro.
Royal Cape Golf Club remains a premier tournament venue. It has hosted the Cape Town Open since 2012. It is a playable course for all skill levels. The views and service are top notch.
