Was it really a century ago that Vancouver’s Royal Bank Tower first graced this city’s skyline? This isn’t just another building. It’s a testament to ambition and a bygone era. It is located at 675 West Hastings Street.

Welcome to the Royal Bank Tower. It once served as the regional office for the Royal Bank of Canada. That was until 1973. Now, let’s delve into the story behind this remarkable structure.

In the 1920s, the Royal Bank became Canada’s largest bank. It sought to solidify its presence in Vancouver. The bank decided to erect a skyscraper that would be a monument to its financial power. The location at 675 West Hastings Street became the most valuable real estate in the city.

Construction of the Royal Bank Tower began in 1929. It was completed in 1931. The cost was CAD $1.75 million. That was a significant sum at the time. Sumner Godfrey Davenport, the bank’s chief architect, designed the building. He aimed to express power, strength, permanence, and stability. Davenport also designed the bank’s Montreal headquarters.

The Royal Bank Tower stands 16 stories tall. Its height reaches 84.74 meters. That is 278 feet. The building combines Art Deco and Neo-Romanesque styles. This blend reflects both modernity and classicism.

Notice the arched windows and classical composition. They echo the bank’s Montreal headquarters. About 90 percent of the building materials came from British Columbia. The andesite stone cladding came from Haddington Island.

The Royal Bank Tower became a beacon in Vancouver’s financial district. For four decades, it housed the bank’s regional offices. The Royal Bank branch on the lower floors continues to serve the public even today. That is more than 85 years later.

A recent rezoning application sought to add a new 28-story office tower on the adjacent lot. The design was heavily guided by the massing principles of the Royal Bank Tower. The tower effectively balanced the popularity of skyscrapers. It also had the dignified look of previous architectural trends.

The Royal Bank Tower encapsulates the economic optimism of the late 1920s. By the time of its opening, that optimism had vanished due to the Great Depression. It stands as a reminder of Vancouver’s past. It also serves as a foundation for its future. The Royal Bank Tower marked the westward growth of Vancouver’s central business district. Today, it remains a proud part of the city’s architectural heritage.
