Captain Thomas Rowley arrived in Sydney on the ‘Pitt’ in 1792. He was 40 years old. In 1793, Rowley acquired land. It was 240 acres in the Stanmore/Newtown area. He named it ‘Kingston Farm’. Rowley’s ‘Kingston Farm’ was his principal residence. He died there in 1806. In 1799, Governor John Hunter granted Thomas Rowley 750 acres. This was in the Burwood/Strathfield area. It was called ‘Rowley’s Farm’. Thomas Rowley primarily used this farm for grazing Merino sheep. Rowley later renamed his farm ‘Burwood’.
