Picture the sprawling grandeur of Rouse Hill Estate. Imagine a time long past when this very spot was known as Vinegar Hill. A name etched in history due to the brutal 1804 convict rebellion. But the land was soon to be christened anew.

Rouse Hill Estate is more than just a historic house. It’s a living testament to generations of the Rouse and Terry families. Their lives unfolded within these very walls their stories woven into the fabric of this estate for over 180 years. It’s a tale of prosperity and hardship of love and loss of triumphs and tragedies.

Richard Rouse a shrewd and capable man arrived in the colony in 1801. He became Superintendent of Public Works and Convicts at Parramatta. In 1813 he began building his magnificent Georgian home here. He chose this prominent hilltop location with foresight. It provided a stunning view and strategic placement adjacent to the toll house he’d built on the Parramatta to Windsor Turnpike. Rouse Hill overlooked the busy Windsor Road. He and his descendants could oversee their vast agricultural and pastoral interests from this vantage point.

The house wasn’t completed until 1819. Further additions came later in about 1863. The main house stands proudly a testament to Rouse’s ambition and success. It features a fine stone-flagged stair hall with a cantilevered timber staircase. Twenty-two rooms. A staircase hall. A service stair. Even two cellars. The extensive outbuildings reflect the estate’s agricultural operations. A laundry wing. A cottage. A barn. A woolshed. All meticulously constructed.

The gardens are arguably the oldest surviving colonial gardens in Australia. Their design provides fascinating evidence of garden practices evolving across time. From the mid-19th century. To the Edwardian era. Even into the 20th century. This layering of designs and details such as edging fencing and planting containers is simply remarkable.

The family’s story continued for generations. Wealth and social prominence gave way to bankruptcy and family conflict. Tragedy even struck in the form of a mysterious murder. A legacy of both opulence and hardship. The property’s size changed over the years. Reduced by successive subdivisions. Yet the house and the land persevered becoming a house museum under the careful watch of Sydney Living Museums.

Today Rouse Hill Estate stands as a unique time capsule. It offers a rare glimpse into Australian history. A testament to a family’s resilience. Its beauty and its stories linger in the air. Come and experience this remarkable piece of Australian heritage.
