Founded in 1868 in a Maryland farmhouse Round Oak Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Imagine Reverend Robert Taylor a tenant farmer his home the birthplace of this congregation. He and his parishioners established Round Oak Baptist Church in 1873. As their numbers grew so did their influence. They built a lodge a cemetery and even the first Black school in Spencerville. Under Reverend Taylor seven men were ordained into the ministry and two became deacons.
The church faced challenges. The Great Depression tested the faith of Reverend Bernard Botts who led the congregation from 1938 to 1957. Despite hardship he oversaw the construction of a larger building. In 1947 the congregation marched into their new house of worship a symbol of their enduring spirit.
Reverend Norman Kelly the grandson of Reverend Taylor led Round Oak from 1958 to 1968. This period saw the church expand its facilities adding restrooms and a kitchen. He steered the church through turbulent times. The Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War shaped the nation but Round Oak persevered.
Reverend Robert J Anderson Sr served from 1968 to 1975. His tenure included participation in Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s Poor People’s Campaign. Round Oak provided shelter and sustenance to marchers. Reverend Anderson’s dedication to social justice reflected the church’s commitment to serving the community.
In 1976 Reverend Lionel Phillip Pointer Jr became pastor. He has served for over 47 years an extraordinary testament to his leadership. His arrival marked a new era of growth and expansion. In 1982 a new building with about 1000 seats opened. This magnificent structure features royal blue windows and carpeting.
Round Oak has undergone significant renovations since 2009. The project included updates to the lower level sanctuary and administrative offices. The old church was demolished and new ADA-compliant entrances were added. A church museum now showcases the rich history of Round Oak. These improvements reflect the church’s ongoing commitment to serving its community. The current structure is a beautiful testament to faith and perseverance. Round Oak’s story is one of adaptation growth and unwavering devotion. This church stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring power of faith.
