Imagine a scene. Sunlight filters through the leaves illuminating a clearing. Here at the Rotwildgehege in Stuttgart, you can observe the majestic red deer in their natural habitat.

The Rotwildgehege is a special place. It offers a glimpse into the lives of these magnificent creatures. This three-and-a-half-hectare enclosure mimics the natural environment of Germany’s largest wild animal. Up to twelve deer roam freely here, finding ample space, food and exercise.

Originally established in 1815, the area was intended as a hunting ground by King Friedrich of Württemberg. The Rotwildgehege was then home to 568 red deer and 138 fallow deer. What started as a royal hunting ground evolved into a public space to observe wildlife.

Keep an eye out for the new calves. The annual birth of three to four calves is a particular treat, especially for children. The Rotwildgehege is worth a visit in every season.

Take a closer look at the feeding hut. There, you will find detailed information boards about the red deer family. A series of pictures documents the antler development of a Hirsau deer. The pictures were taken in 30-day intervals.

Come between 13:00 and 14:00. That is when you can observe the daily feeding. Freshly collected chestnuts or acorns are a delicacy for the red deer in autumn. You can drop them into the container in front of the feeding house. A natural spring provides the animals with plenty of water.

The Rotwildgehege is part of a larger nature reserve. The Rotwildpark near Stuttgart spans 830.5 hectares. It was designated a nature reserve in 1939 and expanded in 1958. The area was once used as pastureland. Today, the forest is used for forestry and as a local recreation area.

The Rotwildgehege is easily accessible. You can drive or take the bus. There is parking available. Well-maintained forest paths make it easy to explore.

Consider extending your visit. The Rotwildgehege makes a great starting point for longer walks to Solitude Palace, Bärenschlössle or Bärensee.
