Rotary Park

Along the Alexandria railway line, a unique story unfolds. It’s the story of South Sydney Rotary Park. This park isn’t just a green space. It’s a testament to the area’s rich industrial heritage. South Sydney Rotary Park is nestled between Henderson Road, Railway Parade, Progress Road, and Explorer Street. Let’s rewind to 1794. John King received a 30-acre grant. He had to clear and develop the land, earning it the name King’s Clear grant. A portion of this land was later sold to Charles Henderson. He established the Camellia Grove Nursery, capitalizing on the marshy terrain. Henderson’s influence extended beyond horticulture. He served as Mayor of Alexandria from 1878 to 1883, eventually lending his name to Henderson Road. The arrival of the railway in 1855 transformed the area. Railway workshops sprung up, growing into an industrial marvel. North of the tracks, carriage workshops hummed with activity. South of the tracks, locomotive workshops ensured the smooth running of steam engines. By the 1880s, the railways were the lifeblood of the district, providing employment for many. The clang of metal and the hiss of steam filled the air. Streets and houses, once a vibrant part of the community, were absorbed by the expanding railway yards. As steam gave way to diesel, the yards gradually fell silent. They finally closed in 1988. The former railway workshops site later housed Paddy’s Markets. After the markets moved, the site was transformed into the Australian Technology Park. Nearby, the NSW Housing Commission redeveloped the adjoining area. Amidst this transformation, South Sydney Rotary Park emerged, a green oasis amidst the remnants of industry. Opened in 1996, the park is a tribute to the South Sydney Rotary Club. Adorning the park are beautiful mosaics. They were created under the YWCA Landcare Environment Program, adding a touch of artistry to this historical site. South Sydney Rotary Park is more than just a park. It is a living testament to Alexandria’s industrial past. It’s a place where the echoes of history blend with the vibrancy of the present.
