Hidden in the heart of Auckland lies a story. A story of a man named Rota Waitoa. Rota Waitoa wasn’t just any man. He was a pivotal figure in New Zealand’s history. He was the first Māori Anglican clergyman. Right here in Auckland, at St. Paul’s Church, Rota Waitoa’s journey took a significant turn. It was here, in 1853, that he was ordained as a deacon. This marked a groundbreaking moment. It paved the way for other Māori individuals to enter the Anglican clergy. Rota Waitoa’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to his people. Born in Waitoa, Waikato, his life was intertwined with the Ngāti Raukawa iwi. His journey began in 1841 when he was baptized by Rev. Octavius Hadfield. A pivotal encounter with Bishop George Selwyn in 1842 led Waitoa to accompany him to the Te Waimate mission. This sparked a passion for ministry. He pursued theological education at St. John’s College. He then became a teacher and catechist. His path wasn’t without challenges. He faced resistance when appointed to Te Kawakawa (Te Araroa). He navigated these difficulties with grace and perseverance. He later played a significant role in the Diocese of Waiapu, serving alongside other Māori and European clergymen. Rota Waitoa was known not only for his religious leadership but also for his social and political stances. He opposed both the Māori King Movement and the Pai Mārire movement. These positions demonstrated his complex understanding of the changing landscape of his time. His life was tragically cut short in 1866. He died from a fall from a horse. He rests at St. Stephen’s cemetery in Judges Bay, Auckland. His legacy, however, lives on. Rota Waitoa’s story reminds us of the power of faith, resilience, and the importance of bridging cultures. He remains a symbol of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Māori people.
