The construction of the Pentagon spurred massive dredging operations. Tons of sand and gravel were needed for the enormous concrete structure. Material from the Potomac River was barged to a nearby plant. This plant produced over 435000 cubic yards of concrete enough for miles of corridors parking and access highways.
Because of wartime material shortages reinforced concrete replaced steel. This saved 43000 tons of steel. That’s enough to build a battleship. The dredging profoundly altered the landscape. A pile of sediment accumulated forming what we now know as Rosilie Island. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and the impact of large-scale construction.

This trail is 2.2 miles long and takes around 36 minutes.
