King William I’s vision. That’s what Rosensteinpark is all about. Imagine a time before this expansive English garden existed. Before 1824 to be exact. This area was then known as Kahlenstein a far cry from the lush greenery we see today.

Rosensteinpark in Stuttgart is not just a park. It’s the largest English garden in southwest Germany. King William I of Württemberg commissioned its creation. His gardener Johann Bosch brought the king’s vision to life between 1824 and 1840. The king bought all the land from the citizens of Cannstatt between 1817 and 1818. That’s a serious commitment to creating a green space.

At the heart of Rosensteinpark sits Rosenstein Palace. Construction took place between 1822 and 1830. The Wilhelma zoo and the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart are also located within the park’s boundaries. The Lion’s Gate at the upper park entrance a stunning creation by Giovanni Salucci adds to the park’s majestic feel. A lesser-known fact is that a railway tunnel the Rosenstein Tunnel runs beneath the park. This is an intriguing detail that many visitors overlook.

Rosensteinpark’s beauty isn’t only skin deep. Today the park is owned by the State of Baden-Württemberg. It’s a historical monument. Along with the Schlossgarten Leibfried Garden Wartberg and Killesbergpark it forms Stuttgart’s “Green U”. A unique characteristic is its incredibly high hare population. The park boasts the highest concentration of hares in Germany due to a hunting ban.

The park’s history is intertwined with the story of Queen Katharina. Roses were her favorite flowers. The park and the palace were named Rosenstein in her memory a poignant tribute to a beloved queen.

So next time you wander through Rosensteinpark take a moment to appreciate the vision of King William I. His decision to create this incredible space has given generations of people a place of beauty and tranquility. Remember Queen Katharina’s legacy hidden within the name itself. And marvel at the unseen railway tunnel beneath your feet. This is more than just a park. It’s a historical treasure trove a green heart beating in the midst of Stuttgart.
