Remember those school days filled with laughter? Roseneath School is more than bricks. It is a place where memories are made. Roseneath School has a rich history rooted in this very community.

Established in 1898 on Point Jerningham, Roseneath School emerged because Clyde Quay School was overcrowded. Imagine the bustling streets back then. Children excitedly making their way to this new place of learning. The school has a fascinating backstory. It is believed that the land was once the site of Te Wai Hirere. Te Wai Hirere was a stockaded village of Ngai Tara. The name means “the gushing water”. Legend says heavy rain caused a flood during the pā’s construction. This flood brought temporary havoc.

Tragedy struck Roseneath School on May 29, 1926. The first school building was destroyed by fire. It was a devastating blow to the community. The school was rebuilt. In the 1930s, the Roseneath School roll grew significantly. The roll grew to over 300 students. A Roseneath Side School was even set up in Hataitai to accommodate the growing number of students.

Roseneath School has seen many changes over the years. The school was remodeled in 1978. A second story was added in 1999. This accommodated the growing roll.

Today, Roseneath School continues its commitment to education. It emphasizes active learning. Skills in reading and math are promoted. You can engage in activities like Book Club and buddy reading. These cater to all learning styles. The emphasis on outdoor play ensures a balanced educational experience.

The ethnic diversity is remarkable. 79% were Pākehā. 9% were Māori. 12% were from other backgrounds. Roseneath School is committed to student diversity. It ensures that every child feels valued and supported.

Roseneath School is dedicated to high educational standards. It also maintains inclusive learning practices. 95% of Year 3-8 students achieve at or above their expected curriculum level in reading. 90% do the same in mathematics. Active learning strategies include Book Club, buddy reading, and Maths Café. These engage students and promote deeper understanding. The school employs differentiated learning strategies and “The Roseneath Way” positive behavior practices.

Roseneath School also has a war memorial. It commemorates former pupils who died in World War I. The Governor-General unveiled the memorial on November 10, 1917. The Mayor of Wellington and the Prime Minister attended.
