Gazing upon the seemingly unassuming Rosenbach, could you ever guess its dramatic history? This little stream, winding its way through Vienna’s Ottakring and Penzing districts, is more than just a picturesque waterway. The Rosenbach holds tales of floods, hidden channels, and even rare crayfish. The Rosenbach begins its journey high on the Gallitzinberg, cascading down to feed the Jubiläumswarte-Teich. From there, it meanders through the Rosental, nurturing the various Kleingartenanlagen it passes. The Rosenbach even lends its waters to the Dehneparkteich, a serene oasis within the bustling city. But the Rosenbach has a secret. Beneath the streets, a 534-meter-long channel carries its flow underground. This hidden waterway eventually joins the left Wienflusssammelkanal, a testament to Vienna’s intricate water management system. The Rosenbach’s journey hasn’t always been so smooth. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it flowed into the Mariabrunner Mühlbach. This often led to overflowing during heavy rains. An ingenious solution was devised. Excess water from the Rosenbach was diverted into a special drainage ditch near the Hacking mill. This ditch then emptied into the Wienfluss, preventing devastating floods. The Rosenbach has also witnessed Vienna’s changing landscape. The Dehnepark, once a private English garden, saw the Rosenbach rerouted and regulated during its creation between 1791 and 1804. Around 1900, the lower course of the Rosenbach was completely enclosed. The Mariabrunner Mühlbach met the same fate, disappearing into the city’s growing sewer system. Today, the Rosenbach is a haven for nature. It provides a habitat for the rare stone crayfish, a testament to its clean waters. Mayflies and amphipods also call the Rosenbach home, further indicators of its ecological health. Sadly, not all is well in the Rosenbach’s ecosystem. Introduced species in the Dehneparkteich, such as pike, carp, red-eared slider turtles, and signal crayfish, threaten the native amphibians. These invaders, particularly the signal crayfish, are a danger to the delicate balance of the Rosenbach’s ecosystem. As you stand by the Rosenbach, take a moment to appreciate its story. From a mountain stream to an underground channel, its waters have shaped Vienna’s history and continue to support a vibrant ecosystem. So next time you see an unassuming stream, remember the Rosenbach and the hidden depths it holds.
