Rosecroft Raceway opened its gates in 1949. It quickly became the heart of Prince George’s County. Thousands flocked here for thrilling harness races and a vibrant social scene. William E Miller a horse trainer and breeder founded this legendary track. It was unique. It was the first racetrack owned and run by horse owners trainers and jockeys.
The early years saw incredible crowds. In the 1950s average attendance exceeded 7000 people a day. The Miller family the original owners presided over a golden age for Rosecroft. They held memorial stake races annually for both William and his son John. John continued the legacy after his father’s passing. This continued until 1995. The track hosted some of the most prestigious harness racing events. These included segments of the Breeders Crown and the Messenger Stakes a key leg in the Triple Crown of Harness Racing.
Rosecroft’s story isn’t without its challenges. Ownership changed hands multiple times. Some ownerships proved more successful than others. Mark Vogel’s tenure for example was marked by controversy. His neglect of the track and legal troubles led to its decline. A devastating fire in 1991 destroyed the grandstand. It was later rebuilt in 1993 at a cost of $3.6 million. Financial struggles plagued the track for years. The rise of casinos in nearby states drew away bettors and revenue.
Rosecroft closed its doors in 2010. Bankruptcy loomed. However hope emerged. Penn National Gaming acquired the track. They reopened Rosecroft in 2011 aiming to revitalize it. The Stronach Group now owns the storied track.
Rosecroft Raceway isn’t just about horse racing. It hosted other events such as boxing matches and even a cherry blossom rugby tournament. Famous people Lyndon B Johnson Elizabeth Taylor and Nancy Pelosi among others have graced the grounds. Cam’s Card Shark a phenomenal horse once raced here. He nearly broke the single-season record for winnings in 1994.
