Rosebery’s story begins not with a bang but with a whisper a quiet murmur from the past. Stand here on Gardeners Road. Imagine the Rosebery Racecourse bustling with life. Thundering hooves and cheering crowds filled the air. This was once a vibrant hub of excitement. Rosebery’s namesake is Archibald Primrose the 5th Earl of Rosebery a British Prime Minister. He visited Australia in 1883-84. The suburb was named in his honour.

Rosebery’s history is a tapestry woven from threads of racing industry and residential development. The racecourse opened in 1906 as a pony track. It grew in popularity. By the 1920s it rivalled Randwick. This changed during World War II. The racecourse became an army camp. After the war it served as a training track for the Sydney Turf Club. A fascinating shift occurred in 1961. Much of the land was transformed into an industrial area. The housing commission developed the remaining area for high-density public housing.

A unique blend of architectural styles shapes Rosebery’s streetscape. You’ll see California bungalows and Federation bungalows. These charming single-storey homes are a reminder of Rosebery’s planned development. Richard Stanton a developer from the Haberfield area shaped this garden suburb. Rosebery even held garden competitions before the 1990s.

Rosebery’s connection to public transport is another intriguing aspect of its story. A tram line opened in 1902. It ran through Chalmers and Redfern Streets. It went south along Elizabeth Street to Zetland. The line extended to Epsom Road in 1924. A new line was built in 1948 to accommodate the Eastern Suburbs Railway. The tram line was electrified and became a double track. This crucial line closed in 1957.

Today Rosebery is a vibrant blend of old and new. Its rich history is intertwined with its modern development. The suburb boasts Gardeners Road Primary School and the Sydney International Film School. Turruwul Park a large park offers a green space in the heart of Rosebery. The Redfern Raiders Soccer Club calls this park home. The shopping centre on Gardeners Road and commercial developments around Botany Road add to Rosebery’s modern vibrancy.

Rosebery a suburb with a racing history a planned development and a vibrant present. Its story is a testament to the continuous evolution of Sydney. From the thundering hooves of racehorses to the modern hustle and bustle of a dynamic suburb Rosebery holds a unique place in Sydney’s history.
