This unassuming church holds a story that stretches back to the aftermath of World War II. Roppongi Lutheran Church was founded in 1948 by Rev. Dr. William Danker. The church’s location is a testament to a shrewd decision. US Military chaplains at the time identified properties in prime locations available at surprisingly economical prices. This allowed the Missouri Synod to acquire the land where Roppongi Lutheran Church now stands. The church’s early years coincided with the rise of radio evangelism. The Lutheran Hour broadcasts began in 1951, followed by correspondence Bible courses. These efforts helped to spread the Lutheran faith across Japan. A significant event in the church’s history took place in 2013. Tomohiro Fujiki, at the young age of 27, was ordained as a pastor at Roppongi Lutheran Church. This marked him as the youngest pastor in the Japan Lutheran Church. The ordination service was a joyous occasion, attended by clergy from across Japan and guests from the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). The ceremony included readings and blessings from figures like Dr. Masaki, Rev. Randy Golter, and Dr. Collver, each emphasizing the importance of preaching sound doctrine. Following the ordination, Pastor Fujiki celebrated Holy Communion, a poignant moment for the congregation. The event solidified the ties between Roppongi Lutheran Church, the Japan Lutheran Church, and the LCMS, promising continued collaboration in the future. Today, Roppongi Lutheran Church continues to serve its community, a testament to its enduring presence amidst the ever-evolving landscape of Tokyo.
